Tyranny Lessons selected for 2021 Indie Lit Fair

The Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) has partnered with PEN America to hold Indie Lit Fair, a virtual book and magazine fair, during “Power to the People,” the 2021 PEN World Voices Festival. A week-long series held in New York City each spring, the PEN event is the largest international literary festival in the U.S. and the only one with a human rights focus. The festival was founded by Salman Rushdie in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, with the aim of broadening channels of dialogue between the U.S.

A good start to 2021

Spring 2021 has been a productive time for the journal. Our winter 2020 volume, Acting My Age, a book-length meditation on aging and mortality by Thomas Farber, came out. Included in the volume are images by award-winning photographers Wayne Levin and Geoffrey Fricker.

MANOA receives two national awards

The National Endowment for the Arts awarded MANOA an Art Works grant of $10,000 for fiscal year 2020. This grant was one of 1,187 that totaled $27.3 million and supported projects in every state. Art Works grants are given to artistically excellent projects that celebrate American creativity and cultural heritage.

Announcing eco-poetry anthology: Republic of Apples, Democracy of Oranges

Republic of Apples, Democracy of Oranges presents over ninety ecologically minded poets from China and the United States—the two countries most responsible for global carbon dioxide emissions and their effects on extreme climate change. Eco-poets ask, “What can poetry say about our place in the natural world today? How can we express empathy for non-human life to the same degree we express sympathy for ourselves?”

The Association of Writers and Writing Programs will be having its 2019 conference and bookfair in late March in Portland. At the event, we will be celebrating our thirtieth anniversary, presenting on literary publishing and translation.
