Senator Mazie Hirono Introduces Botanical Research Bill
Our own Marian Chau, manager of the Seed Conservation Laboratory was involved in the drafting of a recent bill introduced by Mazie Hirono that promotes botanical research. The Botanical Sciences and Native Plant Materials Research, Restoration, and Promotion Act promotes the hiring of botanists, research on native plant materials, and encourages the planting of native plants on federal lands.
Marian has been involved since 2015 in drafting this bill when she was Co-Chair of the Public Policy Committee for the Botanical Society of America. Just after the House version was introduced in February 2017, Marian visited Senator Hirono’s office in DC to advocate for a Senate version. She also followed up by visiting Senator Hirono’s local Hawaii office in September 2017.
We are really proud to have Marian as part of the Lyon Arboretum ohana!
