Two Guest Artists Visit Department of Theatre + Dance

Laura Gardner and Frank Collison to visit UHM’s Department of Theatre + Dance January 22nd and January 23rd.

An established professional in the national and international world of theatre, television, and film, Laura has been on the faculty of The Howard Fine Acting Studio in Los Angeles for over 18 years. She has taught in NYC at HB Studio, Stella Adler Institute, The American Academy of Dramatic Art, in Wales The Actors Workshop and the Academy of Musical Theatre, the Screen Actors Guild Conservatory in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. She is a frequent guest teacher in New Mexico and teachers her ‘Authenticity Workshop’ across the country. She has been a Featured Artist at The Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Valdez, Alaska for the last 12 years where she created The Monologue workshop.

She has trained at Boston University, Rutgers, and HB Studio, with Uta Hagen, Carol Rosenfeld, and Ken McMillan. Some of her Theatre Credits include Smile on Broadway, The Cocktail Hour, Other People’s Money, and Welded Off-Broadway. She has also been on National Tours of Showboat, Doonesbury, Oliver, and My Fair Lady.

TV and Film credits include: The Romanoffs, Outcast, Doubt, Scandal, Fresh Off the Boat, Secrets and Lies, Criminal Minds, Castle, My Name is Earl, Law and Order LA, Torchwood, The Forgotten, Crash, ER, Close to Home, and The West Wing.

She has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress, LA Weekly for her performance in Fighting Words, at the Celtic Arts Center in Los Angeles and the Millennium Center in Wales. ADA Best Actress for Idle Wheels at The Road Theatre, by Alaska writer/actor James Morrison. And she has won the Media Access Award for her more than 20 years of coaching Actors with Disability.

Frank Collison

Frank earned his BA in theatre at San Francisco State University, helped establish a summer theatre company in the Sierra Nevada and trained at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. He then went on to earn an MFA in acting at UC San Diego. Frank first appeared on stage as a five month old baby at a tent theatre in Ohio. He has performed in over 150 theatre productions.

Frank has worked off Broadway and in regional theaters in Boston, Denver and California. His theatrical roles have ranged from “Puck” in Midsummer’s Nights Dream to “Miss Havisham” in Great Expectations to “Jacob Marley” in Christmas Carol . He once toured 39,000 miles around the country in nine months performing four plays in repertory. Frank is a founding member of Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice, California, which has won over 25 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards.

Film credits include The Hero, Grandma, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Wild at Heart, The Village, The Happening, The Blob, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, Alien Nation, Mobsters, The Last Boy Scout, Buddy, Diggstown, My Summer Story, The Majestic, The Whole Ten Yards, Hidalgo, Hope Springs, Suspect Zero, Radio Free Albemuth, Hesher, Hitchcock , and L.A. Slasher. 

Collison is best known to TV audiences as Horace Bing, the bumbling telegraph operator, on CBS’s long- running series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman . His numerous other television appearances have included guest-starring roles onTwin Peaks, 9-1-1, Silicon Valley, Backstrom, Monk, HBO’s Carnivàle and Luck, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Criminal Minds, Seventh Heaven, My Name is Earl, NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blues, Stargate Atlantis, and Good Luck Charlie.

In 2016 he appeared in the sixth season of the anthological series American Horror Story (Roanoke) . He is currently a series regular voice actor in the Adult Swim animated original Mr. Pickles . Frank will soon be guest starring on Proven Innocent , a new series on Fox.
