The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant is a scalding feat of hermetic obsession, set in the 1980s punk-rock high-fashion playground which is Petra’s live-work loft in West Germany. Class, gender, sexual power dynamics, manipulation, abuse, and debasement collide in the tale of Petra Von Kant, a fashion designer and her latest obsession Karin, a young ingénue with ulterior motives. A true chamber piece, Petra holds court in her stylish apartment while her long-suffering assistant Marlene silently takes care of the increasingly volatile Petra and her parade of guests. Scathingly emotional and darkly funny Fassbinder evokes the melodramas of Douglas Sirk through a Queer lens and a subversive sense of formalism where style becomes substance and fake can be just as real.
CONTENT ADVISORY: strong language, sexual situations, and substance abuse. Verbal references to suicide and marital rape.
