From her award letter, “As the selection committee, we delight in wishing you many years filled with inspiration and creative opportunities to lead the field as you join the ranks of other Winifred Ward Scholars. The award will be announced at the AATE [American Alliance for Theatre and Education] conference in Boston this summer and presented from someone on the Winifred Ward Board that oversees the scholarship fund.”
Winifred Ward is remembered as “the pioneer of children’s theatre and creative drama in the United States.” Award candidates are graduate-level scholars in the field of Youth Theatre. They are evaluated on faculty recommendations, academic and scholarly performance, and intellectual and artistic ability. The winning candidate must also demonstrate consistency with the legacy of Winifred Ward by demonstrating strong professional development as well as outstanding contributions in an aspect of youth theatre or creative drama.
