Fall Footholds: Prism – Media Release

Media Release – October 2, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Department of Theatre and Dance and Kennedy Theatre are proud to present Fall Footholds: Prism, a dance concert featuring student choreography and performance.  The production includes a diverse program of new dances by UHM dance students and highlights MFA and BFA thesis works. Twelve movement pieces have been selected for the production, showcasing the talents of Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidates and undergraduate dance student artists exploring movement invention, choreographic abstraction, and social change.  Performances will take place October 23, 24, 25, and 26 at 7:30 p.m., and October 27 at 2:00 p.m. in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre.  A free post-show rap will follow the Friday, October 25 performance.  Tickets are $8-$18.

MFA Dance candidate Angela Sebastian presents her choreographic thesis “Pleasant Remembrances” including dancers Tahirih Perez, Francisann Camuso, Tina Chan, and Amanda Allen, and an original solo “Me, Myself and I.” “Pleasant Remembrances” explores aspects of previous choreographies she has created and plays with movement concepts through revisiting, relearning, and restaging them on new bodies.  Her choreography is also a collaboration with an original music score “The Secret of a Dream” by composer Smee Wong. Sebastian filmed and edited the video projection design images of dance that are incorporated into the work to visually perpetuate the sensation of memory.  Emma Majewski, BFA Dance candidate, creates “Pillar of Salt,” a contemporary ballet performed by dancers Simone Lai Shinde, Kana Fairbanks, and Iana Weingrad and herself. This senior project choreography explores the characteristics of salt crystals, by pairing sharp angular shapes and sweeping ballet movement.

Five MFA Dance candidates, Holly Chung, Amanda Allen, Katelyn Wyatt, Iana Weingrad, and Chloe Groom, are debuting choreography on the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre stage. Chung’s “SAND” expresses the pure joy and release of finding freedom after being painfully oppressed for a long period of time. Allen’s “Slightly Soiled” highlights the experience of deep yearning.  In “Powerful by SHE”, Wyatt brings power to the stage by focusing on women and nature. Her choreography is a collaboration with music composer Hung Wen. Weingrad describes her choreography “Higher Ground” as “a dance about empowerment and preserving cultural heritage.”  Groom’s “Trick or Treat” is an abstract drama marked by urban sensuality and a reverence to mythology.

Movement-based media art is also highlighted in the production in an installation video design in the lobby of the theatre. MFA Dance candidate Matt Fennelly presents a video dance “THE 411,” a piece representing the water cycle of a forest in real time and weather phenomena as a result of the hydrological process. Holly Chung presents her dance for camera installation called the “Beauty of Mauna Kea.”

Prism also showcases student-choreographed and performed solo works by undergraduate students. Leilani Contreras Del Toro’s “What About Us” is inspired by climate change. She says, “We know we can make a difference in the world. We just need a chance.” When Dr. Jhalak Kara Miller, Associate Professor of Dance and Faculty Advisor of Prism, was asked about the theme of the show, she said, “Dance can be viewed from many perspectives and different aesthetics. The concept is that a prism refracts surfaces and casts light into a spectrum of colors.  The prism through which we see, understand, perform, or create dance is so unique. Our dancers in this show successfully bring their own visions, passions, and creations to the stage empowered by their personal dance training and life experiences.”
