SYNOPSIS: Hannah loves gorillas, but she’s never seen a real one. It’s the night before her birthday and something amazing is about to happen. Join Hannah and the world’s friendliest gorilla as they embark on a thrilling, moonlit adventure in this adaptation of the award-winning picture book by Anthony Browne, England’s former Children’s Laureate.
SCRIPTS: Scripts are available for checkout at the main department office. Additionally, you can email the director for a PDF of the book.
DETAILS: This is the T+D department’s mainstage TYA production. However, the whole piece will take place in and around the Commons Art Gallery for very young audiences (ages 3 – 8). The play WILL run during finals week and those auditioning MUST bring their full finals/class schedule with them to the audition.
PERFORMERS: Only two actors are actually called for in this piece – Hannah, a young girl and her father (who also becomes the gorilla). Midway through the piece both Hannah and her father/gorilla “become” puppets (or, they begin to manipulate puppets of themselves). In addition to these principal parts, the director is adding several safari guides and a life-sized gorilla character. The production may double cast all or some of these roles.
PREPARE: Be prepared to “act” as the human characters (i.e. Hannah and her father) and also to “act” as the puppet characters (i.e. Hannah and the gorilla). In addition, you may be asked to sing a wee bit and perform some simple movement sequences.
