Emma Breslow: Awards and Interview
Congratulations to PhD candidate Emma Breslow on receiving grants from the Elizabeth Spann Student Enrichment Fund and from the Laurence C. and M. Terry Thompson Fund for Research and Publication in Linguistics and Oral Literature to help support her dissertation research on secular Yiddish sociophonetic variation. The awards will contribute to the compensation of three transcription assistants (Dina Malka Botwinik, Grisha Leyfer, and Dina Gorelik) and so are especially appreciated. Emma is pictured here with one of her interviewees and friends, Linda Gritz.
Emma’s dissertation work and familiarity with language revitalization led to an interview published in Forverts (the Yiddish-language portion of the Forward), “vos aktivistn far shprakhn in a sekone kenen zikh oplernen eyner funem tsveytn“, about what activists for at-risk languages can learn from each other. Test out your Yiddish skills and see if you can spot the mention of the Endangered Languages Project!
