The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa Wormlab was founded by Dr. Julie Bailey-Brock to study the benthic invertebrate fauna of Hawai’i and the tropical Pacific. Although Dr. Brock retired in 2018, the Wormlab continues to be a home to a diverse group of researchers including technicians, post-docs, graduate, and undergraduate students who all share an interest in studying marine invertebrate biology from a variety of perspectives—from taxonomy and physiology to community ecology.
Currently, the Wormlab does not have the resources to mentor graduate and doctorate students with their degrees, however we occasionally have paid internships positions open to UH Mānoa undergraduates. Students assist with the City & County of Honolulu Ocean Sewage Biomonitoring study that our lab has participated in since 1986. During their time at the lab, students gain research experience as well as learn the in and outs of marine invertebrate identification and taxonomy.
We are also happy to answer any identification questions! If you find a worm or an unknown soft-bodied animal out in the ocean and are wondering what it is, we may be able to help.
