The School of Life Sciences encourages students to participate in Directed Research (BIOL 499), which provides students with an opportunity to execute hypothesis-based research under the guidance of an experienced researcher. This can be completed within the School of Life Sciences, in another department on campus, or with researchers outside of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Students must find their own research mentor and are encouraged to reach out to faculty whose research aligns with their interests. How the research mentor is affiliated with the School of Life Sciences will affect the Directed Research registration process. Use the table below as a guideline to help you determine what steps are necessary to successfully register.
