Tragopogon.mirus is an allotetraploid species (2n=24) derived from hybridization between T. dubius (2n=12) and T. porrifolius (2n=12). The image on the right shows a mix of the parental species, T. porrifolius (purple heads), T. dubius (yellow heads), and an individual with hybrid morphology (purple head with yellow center, circled). This individual is either a sterile F1 hybrid or the derived fertile allotetraploid, T. mirus. Simple pollen and seed fertility tests would likely resolve this question. |
