This is a heterostylus species, meaning that a given population hosts at least two different kinds of plants with respect to the ratio of stamen:style length. In this case some plants have "thrum" flowers with longer stamens and shorter styles while other plants have "pin" flowers with styles exceeding the stamens. Although the stamens are no longer present as the flower fades, the length of the persistent styles on developing fruits still allows identification of "pin" and "thrum" plants.
