The plants depicted in the images below are rather arbitrarily included here. Gayophytum diffusum is so broadly defined (note the key in Jepson Manual).that it can accommodate plants exhibiting some of the features of a number of other species in the genus. Gayophytum populations from Steens seem particularly difficult to assign to species. For example, the images below represent plants that show tendencies toward either G. decipiens or G. racemosum (leaves longer than internodes, leaves and fruits erect to ascending, flowers small, fruits sessile or with a stout narrowed sterile portion, fruit compressed [but not as flat as G. humile]).
