Heart of Okinawa
September 1, 2026 – September 30, 2026
Location: Asia Collection
The exhibit, Heart of Okinawa – Sharing the Peace-Seeking Heart of Okinawa with the World: Remembering the Battle of Okinawa and Delivering the Message to Realize Peace, is presented by the Okinawa Prefectural Government and was created by its Peace and Subnational Diplomacy Promotion Division. Last year was the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa and the end of World War II. As its title suggests, it is an exhibit that remembers the Battle of Okinawa while promoting peace and advocating for peace education.
It includes historical information about the battle, what happened to Okinawa, and where it is now. It incorporates short excerpts of testimonies from people who experienced the war, as well as quotes from young people about why they feel it is important to know about the Battle of Okinawa and why it matters to them. Select library materials from our collections relevant to the topic are also on display. The exhibit is on display on the 4th floor in the Asia Collection Reading Room until Sept. 30, 2026.
