Contemporary Legal Issues in Financial Law

The Center for Korean Studies is joining several other organizations in hosting an international conference, Contemporary Legal Issues in Financial Law: Comparative Perspectives of South Korea and the United States, Wednesday, January 23, 2019.

The conference, which runs from 1:30 p.m to 5:40 p.m. in the Center auditorium, is co-hosted by The Korea Financial Law Association; Pacific Asian Legal Studies; and the Institute of Asian-Pacific Business Law, William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. It is co-sponsored by the Korea Securities Depository.

The program begins with an opening address by Jung Dae-Ik, president of the Korea Financial Law Association and a professor at Kyungpook National University, and a welcoming address by Professor Baik Tae-Ung of the William S. Richardson School of Law and current director of the Center for Korean Studies.

The remainder of the program consists of five topical sessions featuring a single presentation followed by discussion. The sessions are:

  • 1:40 p.m. — Session 1: Legal Issues in Bail-In—Focused on Crossborder Issue with presentation by Yang Gijin of Chonbuk University and discussion led by Jang Deok Jo of Sogang University and Lee Bomi of the Republic of Korea Ministry of Justice.
  • 2:20 p.m. — Session 2: Asian Corporate Insolvency Reform in the Aftermath of the 1997 Financial Crisis: The Ongoing Development of (Effective) Insolvency Infrastructures with presentation by Charles Booth of the William S. Richardson School of Law and discussion led by Seong Seung-Je of the Korean Legislation Research Institute and Ha Young-Tae of Gangneung-Wonju University.
  • 3:30 p.m. — Session 3: Comparative Analysis of the Separation of Banking and Commerce in the USA, Japan, and Korea with presentation by attorney-at-law Seo Mun Sik of the firm Kim and Chang and discussion led by Kim Hong Ki of Yonsei University and Lee Jae-Young, attorney with Trans-Pacific Legal Services.
  • 4:10 p.m. — Session 4: Contents of the Bank of Korea’s Monetary Policy Instruments and Suggestions for Improvement with presentation by Rho Chul Woo of Semyung University and discussion led by Yoo Ju Seon of Kangnam University and Choi Jongsok, a J.D. candidate in the William S. Richardson School of Law.
  • 4:50 p.m. — Session 5: Legal and Regulatory Issues on the Regulatory Sandbox Regime of Korea with presentation by Ko Young Mi of Soongsil University and discussion led by Kim Jae Bum of Kyungpook National University and Choi Jaerim of the University of Hawai’i.
