The 2025-2026 Sustainability Film Series kicked-off on Friday, September 12 with Ocean - a film by David Attenborough. Stay tuned for information about the rest of the series!
The Sustainability Film Series was established in 2023 through a collaboration between ISR, the Hawaiʻi Climate Commission, the Better Tomorrow Speaker Series, and the Honolulu Museum of Art. This annual series explores contemporary issues at the intersection of human and natural environments, integrating films and public conversations that link select themes to Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region. Panelists with differing expertise, including scientists, policy-makers, nonprofit experts, and artists, will discuss the many dimensions of existing efforts and sustainability solutions. The series is open to the public and designed for broad engagement. It is our hope that the series inspires communities of practice among students and community members by empowering you to engage in these important social and environmental issues.

Ocean with David Attenborough (2025)
A breathtaking journey through kelp forests, coral reefs, and the open ocean, this new, feature-length documentary–narrated by David Attenborough–explains why a healthy ocean is vital to maintaining a stable planet. Key messages for Hawaii is that marine reserves like our own Papahanaumokuakea replenish our coral reefs, as does protection of herbivorous fishes that are the saviors of our reefs against coral bleaching.
Mark Hixon - Marine Biologist and Professor at UH Mānoa
‘Aulani Wilhelm - Native Hawai‘ian Conservationist and CEO of Nia Tero
Sheila Sarhangi (Moderator) - Director of the Pacific Islands Heritage and Expand Papahānaumokuākea Coalitions
