Minor in Sustainability
Cross-disciplinary education in sustainability that complements a major and emphasizes environmental stewardship.
*While the form for declaring the Minor is not available yet, feel free to contact ISR advisor Ketty Loeb to discuss what you can do to be ready to declare when the form is finalized in STAR. Read on for more information on the program!*
The Minor in Sustainability is intended for UHM degree-seeking undergraduate students looking for cross-disciplinary education in sustainability that complements their major degree and enables them to become better environmental stewards. Students who complete this minor will be able to engage in systems thinking and problem solving for the purpose of creating enduring processes for environmental stewardship. Within this minor, students will develop: 1) an understanding of the interconnectivity of human and natural systems; 2) evidence-based reasoning on the implications of sustainability problems and/or proposed solutions; and 3) an understanding that multiple knowledge systems inform processes for achieving sustainability.
The program requires a total of 15 credits, of which 3-6 are lower and 9-12 are upper division. There must be a minimum of 9 upper division credits and a minimum of 3 lower division credits. Students will choose five 3-credit SUST courses from at least two different home units. Students are encouraged to reach outside of their core discipline in their course choices.
For transfer students to UH Mānoa, courses from other institutions can count towards the minor with director approval. The criteria for approval will be similar to determining any course alternative, such that there are comparable SLOs. For transfers from other UH campuses, students who have taken lower division S-designated courses can similarly receive credit for up to two lower division courses.
