2019 Writing Contest

In conjunction with the novelist/critic Viet Thanh Nguyen’s visit to UHM in September 2019 as the Dan and Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals, the Inouye Chair committee announces a student writing contest. UHM students are encouraged to read, study, and engage Nguyen’s work and express their ideas in writing.

Any undergraduate or graduate student at UHM who will be registered in Fall 2019 semester is eligible to submit.

Students should submit a piece of writing no more than 1,500 words in response to one or more of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s works, including his novel, short stories, scholarly writing, and op-eds. (The list of his representative writings can be found on his website.) The format and style is open. Criteria for selection will include serious engagement with Nguyen’s work, clarity and originality of ideas, and the power of writing.

An award with a cash prize will be given to one undergraduate and one graduate student. The winners will receive the award at Viet Thanh Nguyen’s keynote lecture on September 19, 2019.

Submission deadline: September 1, 2019

Send submission as a Word file to UHWritingContest2019@gmail.com with “Writing contest [indicate UNDERGRADUATE or GRADUATE] entry” in the subject line. Include your contact information in the email text.
