The Mānaleo programs, under the direction of Dr. A. Kuuipolani Kanahele Wong, are geared to enhance student, faculty, & community acquisition of Hawaiian in real-life situations through the interaction with Mānaleo:
First established in 2001, Kaulakahi Aloha is a unique learning opportunity for students and faculty members alike. Participants are immersed in the Niʻihau community currently residing in Kekaha, Kauaʻi. During the time spent in Kekaha, participants are able to strengthen their language abilities by interacting with Mānaleo in a variety of activities such as fishing, lei pūpū workshops, food preparation and cooking, and countless other cultural demonstrations.
Ka Waihuna O Ka Naʻauao
Similar to Kaulakahialoha, Ka Waihuna O Ka Naʻauao is a learning opportunity for students to strengthen their language abilities by engaging with Mānaleo, face-to-face. Students are immersed in the Niʻihau community of Kekaha, Kauaʻi, and work with Mānaleo on a variety of activities such as fishing, food preparation, lei making, and horseback riding. Students are also given the opportunity to shadow the teachers of Ke Kula Niʻihau in Kekaha to observe and study teaching methodologies of the Mānaleo faculty and staff.
The Keʻena Mānaleo is a learning resource for students to strengthen their language abilities. Students are privileged to be able to interact face to face with two of our resident Mānaleo, Lolena Nicholas and Dr. Kuuipolani Kanahele Wong. Daily activities are planned to help students engage with these Mānaleo; activities such as playing music, watching movies, a variety of board games, and many more.
First produced in 2011, Lā Mānaleo was established to create a space for students and faculty to interact face-to-face with various mānaleo at the University while learning a plethora of cultural knowledge. Since its inception, Lā Mānaleo has brought 13 mānaleo presenters, created 30 hours of video documentation of the various demonstrations of these mānaleo, and has hosted over 2100 student, faculty, and community attendees.
