Released in Japan in 1946, No Regrets for our Youth(わが青春に悔なし)explores forbidden political action and romance in tumultuous 1930s Japan. Beginning in the shadow of the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, the story follows Yukie, her professor father, and two of his students. What actual events may have inspired the film? Why did Toho films collaborate with the Supreme Command of the Allied Powers to make it? Do the themes of resistance and independence for women and political dissidents fall in line with dominant post-war ideologies? The introduction will address these questions (and more!), and we hope you’ll stick around after for discussion.

History through Film is presented by Phi Alpha Theta.
