San Antonio’s new ambitious pre-school program

Just weeks after the city of San Antonio launched its innovative, $248 million Pre-K 4 SA program for preschoolers from poor and working-class families, administrators have already made adjustments both large and small to improve the system. The program is the brainchild of Mayor Julian Castro who pushed through a sales tax hike to finance the project. Find details of the new program here.

Early Learning and Vocabulary

Researchers in Michigan have found that an emphasis on vocabulary for early learners could be essential in closing the gap for Common Core State Standards, reports Sarah D. Sparks from Education Week. The study’s authors, Susan B. Neuman and Tanya S. Wright, “analyzed how kindergarten educators choose and teach new words, both in the instruction that teachers give and in basal-reading books.” Their findings also highlight an important issue of vocabulary gaps between early learners of different demographic groups.
