The graduate certificate in Sustainable Fisheries is available for graduate students enrolled in other relevant degree programs at UH who want to also include a substantial element of fisheries-related coursework or research in their degree program. The certificate will serve as a way to provide recognition of their expertise in this subject matter, while also potentially supporting further studies in fisheries.
The requirements for the Graduate Certificate will align with the requirements of the Graduate Division’s Graduate Certificate. The expected length of this program is one year.
Advising
Each student will be assigned a two-person advisory committee consisting of one member of the fisheries graduate program and the student’s departmental advisor. This committee will ensure that the student is supported in their progress through the certificate program.
Coursework and Requirements
15 hours of coursework
- 9 credits will be fulfilled by completing FISH 601, 602 and 603
- 1 credit of FISH 691: Sustainable Fisheries Seminar (optional)
- 5-6 credits of elective courses
Culminating Experience
The culminating experience may be the student’s fisheries-related thesis or dissertation, or a paper and presentation relating the research in their primary degree program to fisheries. The Graduate Certificate is awarded in the same semester in which the candidate receives his/her master’s or doctoral degree.
Application and Admissions
Minimum Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in any field
- Accepted into a relevant graduate program at the University of Hawaii including, but not limited to, oceanography, marine biology, natural resources and environmental management, agricultural and resource economics, geography, political science, hawaiian studies, pacific island studies, urban and regional planning, or other life sciences.
Application Procedures
Application to the Graduate Certificate Program in Sustainable Fisheries is completed in the UH Graduate Application portal. All application materials should be submitted directly through this application portal.

Application Deadlines
Applications are accepted year round, but should be submitted by August 16 (late application are accepted) for fall semester admission. Students will be notified of admission by end of August (subject to change). Contact us at uhmfish@hawaii.edu if applying for late admission. The Program’s Admissions Committee will review the application when it is complete.
The deadline for Spring 2027 admission is November 15, 2026.
