In order to form a covalent bond, each element has to share one unpaired electron.

Fig. 2.29 gives an example of how to make a Lewis dot structure. First, determine how many atoms of each element are needed to satisfy the octet rule for each atom. In the formation of water, an oxygen atom has two unpaired electrons, and each hydrogen atom has one (Fig. 2.29 A). To fill its valence shell, oxygen needs two additional electrons, and hydrogen needs one. One oxygen atom can share its unpaired electrons with two hydrogen atoms, each of which need only one additional electron. The single electrons match up to make pairs (Fig. 2.29 B). The oxygen atom forms two bonds, one with each of two hydrogen atoms; therefore, the formula for water is H2O. When an electron, or dot, from one element is paired with an electron, or dot, from another element, this makes a bond, which is represented by a line (Fig. 2.29 C).

Image

<img loading="lazy" src="/exploringourfluidearth/sites/default/files/styles/full-page-width/public/M2U2-Fig.2.29%20Tom%20Make%20Water.jpg?itok=T3VRz8p0" width="590" height="107" alt="<p><strong>Fig. 2.29.</strong> (<strong>A</strong>) To make water, oxygen needs two additional electrons, which it can share with two hydrogens, which each need only one additional electron. The octet rule applies for covalent bonding, with a total of eight electrons the most desirable number of unshared or shared electrons in the outer valence shell. For example, carbon has an atomic number of six, with two electrons in shell 1 and four electrons in shell 2, its valence shell (see Fig. 2.29.1). As it has only one electron to start with, it can only make one bond.

ACTIVITY SHEET

Fig. 2.29.1 Period Table (printable version)

<img loading="lazy" src="/exploringourfluidearth/sites/default/files/styles/half_page_width/public/M2U2-Fig2.30%20Single%20Double%20Triple%20Bonds.png?itok=aWWVEv7y" width="290" height="203" alt="<p><strong>Fig. 2.30.</strong>&nbsp; In the formation of a covalent hydrogen molecule, therefore, each hydrogen atom forms a single bond, producing a molecule with the formula H2. A single bond is defined as one covalent bond, or two shared electrons, between two atoms. A molecule can have multiple single bonds. For example, water, H2O, has two single bonds, one between each hydrogen atom and the oxygen atom (Fig. 2.29). Figure 2.30 A has additional examples of single bonds.

Double Bonds

Sometimes two covalent bonds are formed between two atoms by each atom sharing two electrons, for a total of four shared electrons. For example, in the formation of the oxygen molecule, each atom of oxygen forms two bonds to the other oxygen atom, producing the molecule O2. Similarly, in carbon dioxide (CO2), two double bonds are formed between the carbon and each of the two oxygen atoms (Fig. 2.30 B).

Triple Bonds

In some cases, three covalent bonds can be formed between two atoms. The most common gas in the atmosphere, nitrogen, is made of two nitrogen atoms bonded by a triple bond. Each nitrogen atom is able to share three electrons for a total of six shared electrons in the N2 molecule (Fig. 2.30 C).

Compare-Contrast-Connect

Chemical Structures—Visualizing the Invisible

Polyatomic Ions

In addition to elemental ions, there are polyatomic ions. Polyatomic ions are ions that are made up of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds. In order to form neutral compounds, the total charges must be balanced.

Comparison of Ionic and Covalent Bonds

A molecule or compound is made when two or more atoms form a chemical bond that links them together. As we have seen, there are two types of bonds: ionic bonds and covalent bonds. In an ionic bond, the atoms are bound together by the electrostatic forces in the attraction between ions of opposite charge. Ionic bonds usually occur between metal and nonmetal ions. For example, sodium (Na), a metal, and chloride (Cl), a nonmetal, form an ionic bond to make NaCl. In a covalent bond, the atoms bond by sharing electrons. Covalent bonds usually occur between nonmetals. For example, in water (H2O) each hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) share a pair of electrons to make a molecule of two hydrogen atoms single bonded to a single oxygen atom.

In general, ionic bonds occur between elements that are far apart on the periodic table. Covalent bonds occur between elements that are close together on the periodic table. Ionic compounds tend to be brittle in their solid form and have very high melting temperatures. Covalent compounds tend to be soft, and have relatively low melting and boiling points. Water, a liquid composed of covalently bonded molecules, can also be used as a test substance for other ionic and covalently compounds. Ionic compounds tend to dissolve in water (e.g., sodium chloride, NaCl); covalent compounds sometimes dissolve well in water (e.g., hydrogen chloride, HCl), and sometimes do not (e.g., butane, C4H10). Properties of ionic and covalent compounds are listed in Table 2.11.

Table 2.11. Properties of ionic and covalent compounds

Property

Ionic

Covalent

How bond is made

Transfer of e-

Sharing of e-

Bond is between

Metals and nonmetals

Nonmetals

Position on periodic table

Opposite sides

Close together

Dissolve in water?

Yes

Varies

Consistency

Brittle

Soft

Melting temperature

High

Low

The properties listed in Table 2.11 are exemplified by sodium chloride (NaCl) and chlorine gas (Cl2). As water evaporates, the salt solution becomes more and more concentrated. Eventually, there is not enough water left to keep the sodium and chloride ions from interacting and joining together, so salt crystals form. This occurs naturally in places like salt evaporation ponds (Fig. 2.35 A), in coastal tidepools, or in hot landlocked areas (Fig. 2.35 B). Salt crystals can also be formed by evaporating seawater in a shallow dish, as in the <a In other words, the farther the shell is from the nucleus, the larger it is, and the higher its average energy. The valence shell is the outermost electron shell of an atom. In general, the electrons in valence shells determine how the atom behaves in chemical reactions. For example, atoms with complete valence shells, the noble gases, are the least chemically reactive. On the other hand, electrons that have only one electron in their valence shells (Group 1 elements) or elements that are just one electron short of having a complete shell (Group 17) are the most reactive.

Ions

While the atomic number, the number of protons in the nucleus, never changes, some electrons are easily lost or gained by an atom. When an atom gains or loses an electron, the atom no longer has a balanced charge. Therefore, the atom is no longer neutral. An ion is a charged atom. An atom that has gained negatively charged electrons becomes negative. A negative ion or anion is an atom that has gained electrons. An atom that has lost negatively charged electrons becomes positive. A positive ion or cation is an atom that has lost electrons.

Nonmetals tend to gain electrons and become anions. For example, in Fig. 2.22 A, a neutral oxygen atom (O), with eight protons and eight electrons, gains two electrons. This gives it two more negative charges than positive charges and an overall charge of 2–. Metal elements tend to lose electrons and become cations. For example, in Fig. 2.22 B, a neutral sodium atom (Na), with 11 protons and 11 electrons, loses one electron. This is because they have completely full valence electron shells. The octet rule states that regardless of how many electrons a shell can potentially hold, the valence shell can only hold eight electrons. The noble gases have eight electrons in their valence shells. Other elements will gain or lose electrons to achieve completely full valence shells, eight electrons in the valence shell, so that they are also stable. In Fig. 2.22 A, the oxygen atom gained two electrons so that it had eight electrons in shell 2, its valence shell. Ionic bonding occurs through a process called electron transfer, where one atom gives electrons to another. Imagine two puppies. One of the puppies has a bone (Fig. 2.23 A). The puppies represent atoms. The bone represents an electron. The puppies are both neutral. One puppy is a thief and steals the bone from the other puppy. The puppy thief now has the bone (Fig. 2.23 B). The puppy that does not have a bone, that lost its electron and is now positively charged, will follow the thief puppy, which has a negative charge, around to form a puppy pair. The puppy pair is the ionic compound (Fig. 2.23 C).

Image

<img loading="lazy" src="/exploringourfluidearth/sites/default/files/styles/full-page-width/public/M1U2-Fig2-04-Comparing_Density2.png?itok=MqJssBKP" width="590" height="259" alt="<p><strong>Fig. 2.3. </strong>(<strong>A</strong>) The bag filled with yellow liquid is floating on the surface. Water layers can sometimes be felt when swimming. For example, on hot days the sun’s heat can make water at the surface noticeably warmer than the deeper, cooler water. The relative density of one water mass in relation to another determines whether a layer of water floats or sinks.

Density and Buoyancy

Density can be determined by measuring the mass and volume of an object. In the Density Bags Activity, density was not calculated. Instead, relative density was determined by observing whether a bag of one liquid floated or sank in another liquid. A bag of liquid that sank was determined to be more dense than the liquid in the beaker. A bag of liquid that floated was determined to be less dense than the liquid in the beaker.

Image

<img loading="lazy" src="/exploringourfluidearth/sites/default/files/styles/quarter_200w_/public/M1U2-Fig2-5%20RedBlck.png?itok=SLG5PTDS" width="135" height="137" alt="<p><strong>Fig. 2.5.</strong> Forces on a red block in water. Vertical—up-and-down—movement of water masses in the ocean can be explained in terms of two forces. The gravitational force (G) of the earth pulls downward and is proportional to the mass of an object. In Fig. 2.5, the gravitational force (G) is proportional to the mass of the red block. The gravitational force on an object is also called weight. The force due to gravity is greater on objects that are more massive, or weigh more. The buoyant force (B) of water pushes up. In the third century B.C., the Greek philosopher Archimedes was the first to describe buoyancy. He observed that the volume of water pushed out of a tub, or displaced, by an object was equal to the volume of the object. The buoyant force of the water is equal to the weight of the water displaced. This concept is known as Archimedes’ Principle, and it explains why objects sink or float. In Fig. 2.5, the buoyant force (B) is equal to the weight of the water displaced by the red block.

An object accelerates when the forces on that object are unequal. Although acceleration is commonly used to describe an object that is speeding up, the scientific definition of acceleration means changing speed. An accelerating object can be speeding up or slowing down. An object will always move in the direction of the greater force. An object may accelerate downwards (sink) or upwards (rise) in a body of water.

Sinking is a downward vertical movement that occurs when the gravitational force (G) on an object is greater than the buoyant force (B) supporting it (G > B).

Rising is the upward vertical movement that occurs when the gravitational force is less than the buoyant force (G < B).

If all of the forces on an object are balanced, there is no acceleration. In this case, the object may not move—like a book sitting on a flat table—or the object may move at a constant speed—like a car traveling at a steady 80 kilometers per hour. In the water, an object might remain still either at the surface or within the water column.

Surface floating occurs when an object stays at the surface, because the forces are balanced at the surface (G = B).

Subsurface floating, or neutral buoyancy, occurs when an object maintains its position in mid-water, neither sinking nor rising (G = B).

Image

<img loading="lazy" src="/exploringourfluidearth/sites/default/files/styles/full-page-width/public/M1U2-Fig2-06-Three_Cubes.png?itok=3UDxkPGL" width="590" height="232" alt="<p><strong>Fig. 2.6.&nbsp;</strong><span style="line-height: 1.538em;">The yellow cube (<strong>A</strong>) is less dense than water, the red cube (<strong>B</strong>) has the same density as water, and the green cube (<strong>C</strong>) is more dense than water.
