Compare-Contrast-Connect: Scientific Questions in Your Daily Life

We all ask questions every day. If you are able to design a controlled test or an observation protocol to answer your question, then your question is a scientific question. A question like “Why is red your favorite color?” is not scientific because it cannot be tested objectively. However, a question like “Are bees more attracted to red flowers than yellow flowers?” is scientific, because a controlled test or observational study can be designed to seek the answer to the question.

Question Set:
  1. What are two non-scientific questions you have asked yourself today? Describe how they are not scientific.
  2. What are two scientific questions you have asked yourself today? Describe how they are scientific.
  3. Choose one of the scientific questions you asked yourself in Question 2. How could you design a test or an observational study to answer that question?
