On Friday, November 21  a burglary was reported at the McCarthy Mall construction site. The incident took place between 5:00pm yesterday, November 20 and 5:00am today November 21.

An unknown suspect(s) gained access to two fenced construction job sites by cutting the chains on the gates fronting Edmondson Hall on McCarthy Mall. Suspect(s) removed multiple tools and equipment from toolboxes and additional items were taken from a conference room within the site.

Additionally, DPS received a report of suspicious activity involving two male individuals leaving the area, one on a bicycle and one on a moped, after appearing to attempt to gain access to the surfboard/bicycle rack at Hale Haukani. The individuals left the area before DPS arrived.

While it is not yet known if this suspicious activity is related to the burglary at the construction site, DPS is sharing this information so the community can remain alert and report any helpful information.

DPS and the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) are actively investigating these incidents.

DPS recommends:

  • If multiple people have access to a storage room or office, ensure that everyone follows the same protocols for keeping the area secure.
  • Keep an inventory of items in the storage unit and be sure to update the list each time something is removed or replaced.  Keep serial numbers of any higher-priced items or equipment, to ensure that property can be returned to you if recovered.
  • If you believe that your office or apartment has been entered, it is important for your safety that you do not enter the area.  Immediately call DPS at (808) 956-6911 or HPD at 911.
  • Contact us if you observe suspicious people, vehicles, or activity on campus.  While the term “suspicious” may mean different things to different people, we urge our community to contact us even if they aren’t sure whether or not something seems out of place.  If you see something, say something by immediately calling DPS at (808) 956-6911 or HPD at 911 so an officer can respond to check the location.
