Professor Uhalley’s research focuses on modern and contemporary Chinese political history and foreign relations, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. His numerous publications include a history of the Chinese Communist Party, a biography of Mao Zedong, and for nineteen years until 1991, the annual chapter on China in the Hoover Institution’s Yearbook on International Communist Affairs. He was once editor of the Journal of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society and at present is editing a new series of volumes of documents on Sino-Soviet relations. He is currently writing on the “Greater China” phenomenon, on political reform in China, on the Taiping Revolution, and on Sino-Russian relations.
