Since 1997, Tung Bui holds the distinguished professorship of global business endowed by the Matson Navigation Company at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, USA. He earned a doctorate in Management/Econometrics from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland and a Ph.D. in Information systems/Economics from the Stern School of Business, New York University. Prior to joining the University of Hawaii, Prof. Bui was on the faculty at New York University, the United States Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, the Universities of Fribourg and Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in addition to other visiting positions in Canada, France and Germany. In 2020, he was appointed as a senior research affiliate at the APEC Study Center at the University of California at Berkeley. Among many awards, Prof. Tung received in 2016 the Lifetime Research Award by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) College on Group Decision and Negotiation. He is also a Senior Research Affiliate at the University of California at Berkeley, APEC Study Center.

Prof. Bui has published 14 books and over 180 papers. Bui served as a former advisor to the Vietnamese Minister of Education and Training (MOET Dr. Tran Hong Quan) leading to the introduction of the Internet and digital media to the country (1994-1995). In 2011, he was appointed as an honorary professor at the University of Hue. He is Director of the Executive MBA program of the University of Hawaii in Vietnam (VEMBA). Bui appears regularly on radios and televisions and other media promoting economic development and global business, through digital transformation. Among other activities, Bui was the faculty director running a five-year leadership training program for young government leader of the QuangDong province.
