Flagship tutors are your language learning coaches! They will give you opportunities to practice Chinese so that you perform better and achieve more. The tutoring program is about going above and beyond what you’re doing in class so that you have a strong foundation, are able to use Chinese in a wide variety of situations, and increasingly become an independent language learner.
As you progress through the levels, you’ll focus on different things – all tailored to your own strengths and weaknesses. Here’s a general idea of what you’ll do:
[Laying the Foundation] Beginning: 101-202: Develop a strong foundation in basic Chinese grammar and vocabulary. You’ll also learn about the Chinese culture. Students will spend about 1.5 hours weekly in tutoring at this level.
[Expanding your Skills] Beginning: 301-402: Extend your language ability so that you’re able to express yourself in a more sophisticated way. You’ll practice language learning strategies that will improve your linguistic and cultural proficiency. Students spend about 2.5 hours each week in tutoring.
[Developing Professional Communication] Pre-Capstone: Develop language skills and cultural awareness appropriate for professional, formal and academic settings. You’ll use these skills to succeed in direct enrollment at the Overseas Capstone Year at Nanjing University (NJU) or National Yang-Ming University (NYMU) or or Domestic Capstone Year at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Monterey, California and an in-country internship in your field. You’ll also continue to focus on language learning and use strategies that will help you during the Capstone Year and are encouraged to become increasingly independent learners.
