Extracurricular Chinese Tutoring<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One-on-one Chinese tutoring is a key feature of the Chinese Flagship Program. Our instructor, Meng-Ting Lin, from Taiwan is a crucial member of the tutoring team. In one-on-one Chinese tutoring sessions, teachers provide the most suitable teaching methods based on each individual student\u2019s needs, including reading and listening comprehension. This helps students effectively learn Chinese and also provides more opportunities for them to communicate with native Chinese speakers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On January 12, 2023, our teachers and visiting scholars, Meng-Ting Lin and Ying-Yu Chen, along with student ambassador Molly Wolyn, were invited to Moanalua High School\u2019s annual Culture Day. This was the Center\u2019s second year in a row participating in the event, and it was great to see the students again. Last year, Meng-Ting, Molly, and another exchange teacher, Yu-An Lee, introduced the customs of Chinese Lunar New Year and eight treasure porridge to the students, and the students welcomed us warmly.<\/p>

This year, Meng-Ting and Ying-Yu talked about traveling to Taiwan, and the students showed a keen interest in visiting. Although the event was held online, we had a lot of fun interacting with the students and teachers at Moanalua High School. It was great to connect with a local high school and to gain insight on how Chinese is taught in a high school setting.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On Saturday, April 1, 2023, the University of Hawaii at Manoa held its annual Manoa Experience Day, where students, faculty, and staff showcase their programs to the public. The Chinese Flagship program was among the exhibitors, and its teachers, staff, and student assistants came early to set up the booth and prepare for the event.<\/p>

At 10:00 AM, the booth was ready, and a steady stream of visitors began to pour in. The Chinese program had prepared a variety of practical information on Chinese language courses and study abroad opportunities, but it also offered visitors a chance to experience traditional Chinese culture. The booth showcased diabolo (\u626f\u9234) and jianzi (\u6bfd\u5b50), two Chinese cultural activities that were unfamiliar to many visitors. The Chinese program\u2019s teachers, staff, and student assistants were present to demonstrate how to play and to provide guidance. Visitors were invited to try diabolo and jianzi for themselves and to inquire about their cultural significance. The activities were a big hit with visitors, who enjoyed the chance to experience Chinese culture first-hand.<\/p>

Overall, Manoa Experience Day was a resounding success for the Chinese program at UHM. By showcasing the richness and diversity of Chinese culture and language, the program was able to inspire and educate visitors, fostering a greater appreciation for cultural exchange and understanding.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
