Introduction

UHM-in-Taiwan began offering a summer intensive program for students in 2022 through collaboration with the host institution, National Tsing Hua University. UHM-in-Taiwan offers a unique learning experience that allows students to take full advantage of the various cultural and historical sites to achieve the language proficiency goals. The program will be held in Hsinchu for 6 weeks. Students will engage in experiential learning and complete a project-based language learning (PBLL) project investigating Taiwan’s history, culture, politics, and technology development.

Hsinchu (6 weeks)

Academic Credits

6-8 credits, equivalent to two semesters of Chinese courses at UHM

Components

Instructional (Per Week)

  • 3 hours per day, totaling 15 hours of classroom instruction;
  • 2 hours of drill class;
  • 4 hours of experiential learning through a project-based language learning project;
  • 2 hours of one-on-one practice with a language partner 

Cultural

  • Weekly Language & Culture Excursion
  • Overnight Trip

 

Program Fees

$5,600 USD – Estimated Program fee (subject to change)

Includes tuition, accommodation (Hsinchu 6 weeks), cultural activities, excursions, and instructional materials

The program fee does not include: airfare, meals, personal expenses

$284 USD – UHM credit fee

Curriculum

CHN 204 Accelerated Intermediate Mandarin (8 UHM credits)

‍Content of 201 and 202 covered in one semester.
Lecture/Contact Hours: 220hrs

CHN 303 Accelerated Third-Level Mandarin (6 UHM credits)

‍‍Content of 401 and 402 covered in one semester.
Lecture/Contact Hours: 165hrs

CHN 404 Accelerated Fourth-Level Mandarin (6 UHM credits)

Content of 401 and 402 covered in one semester.
Lecture/Contact Hours: 165hrs

CHN 405 Fourth-Year Chinese for Business Professionals (6 UHM credits)

Accelerated, intensive advanced course focusing on specialized advanced listening, speaking, reading, and writing communicative needs of business professionals in the Chinese business context.
