Taiwan Education Information Session took place on March 31st. This event, part of the Ready for Taiwan series, introduced National Tsing Hua University—one of Taiwan’s top universities—and the Huayu Best Scholarship program. CCLE invited the distinguished speakers Professor Xiang-Yu Wang, Associate Vice President for Global Affairs at NTHU, and Research Assistant Yumeco Yuan from the Global Affairs Office.
To warmly welcome the visiting guests, UHM students decorated the conference room with handwritten messages like “歡迎來夏威夷大學(Welcome to the University of Hawai‘i”) and drew NTHU’s panda mascot in the school’s signature purple. They also demonstrated how to make DIY bubble tea to make the experience more hospitable for the speakers.
The event began with CCLE student ambassador Jeno Calara and Chinese Club president Megan Ibara greeted the speakers with traditional Hawaiian flower garlands, a symbolic gesture of Aloha. During the Session, Professor Wang introduced NTHU’s background and its critical role in scientific and industrial development in Taiwan. She highlighted the university’s close partnership with Hsinchu Science Park and its connections to national-level research institutions. Then, Research Assistant Yuan presented on the Huayu Best Scholarship, providing an overview of everyday life in Taiwan—including food, housing, transportation, and culture. She emphasized the benefits of learning Mandarin in Taiwan and offered practical tips for living in Hsinchu.
The event concluded with a fun quiz segment. Students eagerly answered questions such as: “Why study Chinese in Taiwan?”, “What makes Taiwan unique?”, “What scholarships are available for learning Chinese in Taiwan?”, and “In which city is NTHU located?” Responses included: “Because Taiwan is awesome!” and “I want to learn Chinese in Taiwan to make more Taiwanese friends!”
This session not only highlighted Taiwan’s diverse educational opportunities but also offered UHM students—both those who have previously visited and those preparing to go—a deeper insight into life and study in Taiwan. We’re excited for what’s ahead and look forward to seeing many of you in Taiwan soon!
