A group of 12 students and staff of CCLE and the Chinese Section of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL) visited the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Honolulu on Friday, April 12, 2024, where they gained special insight educational opportunities in Taiwan as the opportunity to have questions answered by Director-General Richard Lin.

TECO is the de facto diplomatic mission of the Republic of China, more commonly known as Taiwan. In addition to consular services, it also serves to promote study and investment in Taiwan.

TECO is the de facto diplomatic mission of the Republic of China, more commonly known as Taiwan. Its consular district covers Hawai’i and American Samoa. In addition to consular services, it also serves to promote study and investment in Taiwan. The TECO building itself is notable for its architectural style, which was described by the visiting UHM staff and students as being reminiscent of a Chinese palace.

Upon arriving at the TECO building, the UHM group was greeted by TECO’s Austin Kang, who along with UHM’s Kimberly Batson was instrumental in planning the visit to TECO.

Director-General Richard Lin began the visit with a presentation on the uniqueness of Taiwan and what makes Taiwan an attractive place to study. He also expounded on the numerous scholarship opportunities for those studying in Taiwan as well as the visa process. Director-General Lin then handed the microphone to Kimberly, who gave an impromptu message expressing UHM’s thanks as well as the hopes of its students, doing so with aplomb.

The visit ended with a gracious gift of Taiwanese snacks by Director-General Lin and casual conversation.
