Determining Appropriate Job Attire
Have you ever thought about how your appearance affects your chances of getting hired? Want to learn how to dress to get that job? Read these tips to learn more:
Casual Business Attire for Men:
(Business Casual is most acceptable in Hawai‘i)
- Button down shirt (e.g. Aloha shirt)
- Khaki pants
- Covered shoes with socks (no athletic/sports shoes; no sandals)
Formal Business Attire for Men:
- Long sleeved; collared; button down shirt; necktie; coat (optional)
- Slacks
- Covered shoes with socks (no athletic/sports shoes; no sandals)
Business Attire for Women:
- Collared jacket (optional)
- Skirt (at least knee length) or slacks
- Blouse – no spaghetti straps or sleeveless
- Use dark colors; navy, black, gray
- Covered shoes; low heels (no athletic/sports shoes; no sandals)
- Make-up – natural colors (e.g. beige, brown, light pink); fingernail polish should be natural or subtle colors (e.g. clear, beige, light pinks)
Pre-interview reminders:
- Keep jewelry conservative; limit to one ring per hand and use small earrings
- Remove all facial and visible body piercing
- Cover visible tattoos
- Turn OFF cellular phones and digital pagers
Interview Preparation Checklist
- Find directions/parking to the interview site at least one day prior to the interview.
- Research general information about the organization/employer through contacts (friends, counselors, and/or instructors), websites, and newspapers/publications.
