Assessments are done for all PhD students. In addition, alumni and employer surveys are sent to graduate students post-graduation.

PhD students are expected to successfully pass oral comprehensive examinations, develop a research proposal, conduct the research and defend their dissertation. Guidelines for these milestones are published in the Graduate Division at UHM and in the SONDH PhD handbook.

6) State the Assessment Question(s) and/or Goal(s) of Assessment Activity

Evidence of achievement of learning outcomes is evaluated in several ways. First, course reports and evaluations are evaluated by the Graduate Curriculum & Evaluation Committee and recommendations are provided to the Department Chair. The Department Chair follows up on the recommendations. Second, faculty teaching the clinical or practicum courses are all experienced in the specialty (for example, a nurse practitioner student will have a nurse practitioner faculty evaluating their clinical course) and will provide feedback to students and program directors. The end of program evaluations and certification rates are reviewed by the Graduate Curriculum & Evaluation Committee, Department Chair and the Associate Dean. The school is in the process of developing a “score card” where all evaluation data will be centrally collected, reported, and evaluated. Action plans will follow the evaluation.

7) State the Type(s) of Evidence Gathered

Evidence of achievement of learning outcomes is evaluated by course reports and evaluations. The end of program evaluations is also given to students who have graduated from the program.

8) State How the Evidence was Interpreted, Evaluated, or Analyzed

Links to surveys were sent out by the school’s evaluation specialist. The kind of data, measures used, and individuals or offices responsible for collecting the data is reviewed each year by the Office of the Associate Dean, the Department Chair, and Department staff.  The Graduate Curriculum and Evaluation Committee researches and recommends any changes in national testing agencies for the purpose of benchmarking student learning. Data is collected for each of the measures specified.

9) State How Many Pieces of Evidence Were Collected

Summer 2008, Fall 2008, Spring 2009, Summer 2009 reports received each semester include the course reports, student course evaluation, Café (Instructor’s Evaluations) & Program evaluation.

10) Summarize the Actual Results

The results included ratings of students’ performance, instructor performance, program performance, and overall course performance.

11) Briefly Describe the Distribution and Discussion of Results

The results were distributed to the Office of the Associate Dean, the Department Chair, and Department staff.  The Graduate Curriculum and Evaluation Committee researches and recommends any changes in national testing agencies for the purpose of benchmarking student learning.

12) Describe Conclusions and Discoveries

After reading the results of the evaluations, the Graduate Curriculum and Evaluation Committee researches and recommends any changes in national testing agencies for the purpose of benchmarking student learning.

13) Use of Results/Program Modifications: State How the Program Used the Results --or-- Explain Planned Use of Results

Results are collected for each of the measures specified.  Data is trended if appropriate. Results are reviewed and acted upon by the Graduate Curriculum and Evaluation Committee.

14) Reflect on the Assessment Process

The results included ratings of students’ performance, instructor performance, program performance, and overall course performance. The response rate for evaluations are important in order to provide the instructor, program and school feedback on areas needed for improvement. Putting the surveys in one online document provides the student ease and accessibility to complete it on their own time within a certain time frame.

15) Other Important Information

16) FOR DISTANCE PROGRAMS ONLY: Explain how your program/department has adapted its assessment of student learning in the on-campus program to assess student learning in the distance education program.

Electronic evaluations have been created to assess student learning in the distance program.

17) FOR DISTANCE PROGRAMS ONLY: Summarize the actual student learning assessment results that compare the achievement of students in the on-campus program to students in the distance education program.

Student learning in the distance program is comparable to the on-campus program but provides students with the opportunity to take courses offered via distance and communicate with instructors and classmates via email/list serve or other web-based technology. Students are able to take course on their own time which is accommodating to their own schedules.
