3. Scientific method (effective and ethical practice): Ph.D. graduates are able to independently (a) construct scientific hypotheses, (b) design and carry out research to evaluate them in a timely manner, (c) analyze and synthesize the results of their research, and (d) derive conclusions that advance the fields of geology and geophysics. The highest standards of ethical practice are emphasized.�

Communicate geological knowledge: Ph.D. graduates are able to effectively communicate the findings of their research in writing at a level comparable to that of scientific journal publications, and defend it orally to the satisfaction of a scientific audience. They are also able to communicate orally about Geology though seminar or conference presentations.

8) Briefly explain the assessment activities that took place since November 2018.

All PhD candidates in our department are evaluated annually (by their supervisors, advisors and the Graduate Studies Committee). They must also submit updated CV’s annually.  In addition, they are formally evaluated during their dissertation proposals, comprehensive exams and final oral exams.  Each graduate student must participate in a 1-credit course each year where they present a research study or proposal, and are graded by faculty and their peers. Students formally evaluate the courses that they have taken each semester. As a follow up to this, we adjust the timing and offerings of our graduate lecture and seminar courses to accommodate our students.  We do this to respond to student needs, keep course offerings current, topical, and up-to-date. Each graduate student also participates in  n exit interview with the departmental administrator. Their on-going development is informally assessed through alumni contributions to the departmental newsletter and the alumni association.

  • Seventeen students graduated with PhDs in Earth Sciences during December 2018 through August 2020. Exit interviews were conducted for all of them.
  • Five students sat their Qualifying Examination and 16 completed their Comprehensive Examination in this same period. All were successful.
  • A total of 21 PhD students made 53 presentations to national/international meetings

All 17 graduating students met all program SLOs, as required by the departmental Degree Requirements.

Exit interviews are used to assess what changes and improvements can be made to course content, assistance offered by the advisor and committee, and to establish how best to to equip our students for when they finish graduate.

Evaluation forms completed during the graduate seminars (ERTH610) are distributed to the student for feedback and personal improvement.

Results of the course evaluation forms are reviewed by the Graduate Chair of the Department, the departmental curriculum committee, and the instructors to assess whether improvements are needed of each course and instructor.
