In every course offered, the instructor evaluated/assessed the performance of individual students before assigning them grades. So too, the performance of students in canonical area exams, in contemporary issue exams, and in language competency exams was evaluated/assessed before students were passed on those exams--presuming that they met the appropriate expectations. So too dissertation committee members spent a great deal of time reading and commenting on, in personal meetings with the students involved, dissertation chapters before dissertations were approved for final defense.
