1) List your program's student learning outcomes (SLOs).
Upon completion of the Masters program in Oceanography, students will be able to:
- Define, explain and summarize the basic principles of Oceanography, including the basic tenets of the sub-disciplines, and to explain complex phenomena in their own subdiscipline
- Evaluate the hypotheses, methods, results and conclusions of published scientific literature and apply conclusions to their own work
- Present and defend their scientific findings in front of public audiences
- Write a scientific thesis which contributes to the field2) Where are your program's SLOs published?
3) Upload your program's current curriculum map(s) as a PDF.
No map submitted.
4) What percentage of courses have the course SLOs explicitly stated on the course syllabus, department website, or other publicly available document? (Check one)
5) State the SLO(s) that was Assessed, Targeted, or Studied
All graduate students must complete all of the SLOs in order to graduate from the program.
6) State the Assessment Question(s) and/or Goal(s) of Assessment Activity
All graduate students must complete all of the SLOs in order to graduate from the program.
7) State the Type(s) of Evidence Gathered
Each thesis committee must evaluate the student on the program SLOs, and the results are recorded on departmental and/or Graduate Division forms.
8) State How the Evidence was Interpreted, Evaluated, or Analyzed
The thesis committee evaluates the student on the program SLOs, and the results are recorded on departmental and/or Graduate Division forms.
9) State How Many Pieces of Evidence Were Collected
Fifteen students graduated with M.S. degrees in Oceanography during June 2008 - Sept 2009.
10) Summarize the Actual Results
All graduating students met all program SLOs, as required by the departmental Degree Requirements.
11) Briefly Describe the Distribution and Discussion of Results
Since all graduating students met all program SLOs, as required by the departmental Degree Requirements, distribution and discussion of results is not required.
12) Describe Conclusions and Discoveries
All graduating students met all program SLOs, as required by the department.
13) Use of Results/Program Modifications: State How the Program Used the Results --or-- Explain Planned Use of Results
Course SLO achievement is being assessed by the departmental Teaching Evaluation Committee using customized departmental course evaluation forms.
14) Reflect on the Assessment Process
Program SLO assessment at the graduate level has been an integral part of the department’s degree program since its formation, and continues to work well.
