1) Below are your program's student outcomes (SOs). Please add or update as needed.

1) Students identify the engineering major they are interested in pursuing and understand the 4 year plan (available on the check sheets) to complete that engineering degree.

2) Students identify educational and career interest/goals and learn about the project experiences and other resources that the college has to offer that can help them develop those interests and goals.

3) Students take ownership of their academic plan by filling out their tentative plans on their advising forms before meeting with the advisors each semester.

2) Your program's SOs are published as follows. Please update as needed.

3) Provide the program's activity map or other graphic that illustrates how program activities/services align with program student outcomes. Please upload it as a PDF.

Activity Map File(s) from 2015:

4) Did your program engage in any program assessment activities between June 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015? (e.g., establishing/revising outcomes, aligning activities to outcomes, collecting evidence, interpreting evidence, using results, revising the assessment plan, creating surveys, etc.)

Yes
No (skip to question 14)

5) For the period between June 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015: State the assessment question(s) and/or assessment goals. Include the student outcomes that were targeted, if applicable.

The student academic services office goal was to determine a better way to assess how effective students' thought advising meetings were for them.

6) State the type(s) of evidence gathered to answer the assessment question and/or meet the assessment goals that were given in Question #5.

We created a survey that was sent out by email to students who had met with an advisor in the student academic services office.

7) State how many persons submitted evidence that was evaluated. If applicable, please include the sampling technique used.

We collected 53 responses from students who came in for some kind of advising (either general or mandatory) in the Spring 2015 semester.

8) Who interpreted or analyzed the evidence that was collected? Check all that apply.

Program faculty/staff member(s)
Faculty/staff committee
Ad hoc faculty/staff group
Director or department chairperson
Persons or organization outside the university
Students (graduate or undergraduate)
Dean or Associate Dean
Advisory Board

9) How did he/she/they evaluate, analyze, or interpret the evidence? Check all that apply.

Compiled survey results
Used quantitative methods on student data (e.g., grades, participation rates) or other numeric data
Used qualitative methods on interview, focus group, or other open-ended response data
Scored exams/tests/quizzes
Used a rubric or scoring guide
Used professional judgment (no rubric or scoring guide used)
External organization/person analyzed data (e.g., Social Science Research Institute)

10) For the assessment questions/goals stated in Question #5, summarize the actual results.

Students felt that they were more confident in making decisions towards their academic plans after meeting with an advisor. They would recommend going to see an advisor in the student academic services to their friends.

In addition, a larger amount of survey responses were collected by having the survery online and emailed to the students to complete than in previous years when it was a paper form.

11) What was learned from the results?

We learned that emailing students soon after their advising appointments would gain the most responses. We also learned that students felt that they were benefitting from advising with the professional advisors in the student academic services.

12) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.

We plan to continue sending out surveys on the effectiveness of advising to our students. We also plan to revise the survery questions to better understand what students want/need more information and help with during advising. We hope to eventually include the faculty advisors in the survey to gauge whether our office needs to provide more guidelines or training to the faculty advisors.

13) Reflect on the assessment process. Is there anything related to assessment procedures your program would do differently next time? What went well?

We definitely need to send out the surveys more oftern throughout the semester to get more responses. We did find that having it online does work so we will continue to do that.

14) If the program did not engage in assessment activities, please explain.
Or, if the program did engage in assessment activities, please add any other important information here.
