4) Did your program engage in any program assessment activities between June 1, 2012 and September 30, 2013? (e.g., establishing/revising outcomes, aligning activities to outcomes, collecting evidence, interpreting evidence, using results, revising the assessment plan, creating surveys, etc.)

Yes
No (skip to question 14)

5) For the period June 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013: State the assessment question(s) and/or assessment goals. Include the student outcomes that were targeted, if applicable.

The goal of the COE Office of Student Academic Services faculty  was to gather more data this year regarding SLO #3.  The data will help to refine the delivery of our services.  We also incorporated advisor evaluations as part of our assessment survey.

SLO # 3:

  • Students will utilize OSAS advising services in any of the following ways:  in-person; phone; Skype; Collaborate; and weekend, evening, or satellite advising sessions.

6) State the type(s) of evidence gathered to answer the assessment question and/or meet the assessment goals that were given in Question #5.

An online survey using Google Forms was used to gather evidence regarding student use of our advising services.  The questions posed were a combination of multiple choice and open-ended short answer questions.

7) State how many persons submitted evidence that was evaluated. If applicable, please include the sampling technique used.

Email notifications containing the survey link were sent to students after advising sessions were completed.  This included sessions that were conducted via various modes of delivery (face-to-face, phone, email, skype, etc.).

The student population included currenlty enrolled College of Education students as well as prospective students.

There were 169 students that submitted survey responses.

8) Who interpreted or analyzed the evidence that was collected? Check all that apply.

Program faculty/staff member(s)
Faculty/staff committee
Ad hoc faculty/staff group
Director or department chairperson
Persons or organization outside the university
Students (graduate or undergraduate)

10) For the assessment questions/goals stated in Question #5, summarize the actual results.

Although we offer a variety of advising services to students that utilize alternative modes of delivery, respondents this year indicated an overwhelming preference for face-to-face advising.  The majority of students (57%), prefer seeing advisors face-to-face, but with the convenience of walking in without an appointment (Express Advising).

However, 44% of survey respondents still prefer a scheduled face-to-face advising session with an advisor.

We also gathered data regarding the reasons why students wanted to seek advising assistance.  The results are summarize below:

Please indicate the primary reasons for utilizing our advising services. Please check all that apply.

11) What was learned from the results?

The faculty of the College of Education (COE) Office of Student Academic Services firmly believes that we need to continue to offer various options in delivering advising services to students.  We will continue to utilize technology to disseminate general information that will be useful for students; however, we recognize the powerful connection that occurs when advisors have the opportunity to meet with students in person.

Relationships are formed between advisor and student during face-to-face advising sessions, and the strength of this relationship enhances the overall student experience at UHM.  It also greatly contributes to retention and graduation efforts at the COE and UHM.

12) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.

There are several initiatives that are currently being developed or implemented that will enhance the student experience in the College of Education.  These initiatives rely heavily on face-to-face personalized contact with students.

  • Puahia: Inspiring Emerging Educators:  This program provides a strong sense of belonging and purpose to first year students by utilizing peer mentors that provide guidance and advice to students, by offering workshops, experiential educational activities, and field trips.
  • Pu’uhonua: Hale for Native Hawaiian Students:  Aims to build and strengthen the foundation for future generations of Hawaiian educators by supporting students in gaining admission into COE academic programs at UH Mānoa, at UH Community Colleges, at local high schools, and within the broader Hawaiian community.
  • Tinalak: Envisioning a New Generation of Teachers:  Support for Filipino students in gaining admission and completing COE programs at UH Mānoa. The goal of Tinalak is to envision, inspire, and weave together Hawaii's new generation of teachers through the recruitment and support of Filipinos in the education profession.
  • Peer Advising:  Students are able to seek the advice and support of a fellow student either via individual or group advising sessions.  The COE offers the services of a Mānoa Peer Advisor to provide information and help to those that are seeking someone to share in their student perspective.
  • Satellite Advising:  COE advisors provide advising sessions at all UH community colleges several times each semester.  We strongly believe that this effort assists in building a strong bridge to UHM for students who are seeking admission into the COE.  When these students are admitted, they will have already formed a strong bond with a COE advisor from their prior satellite advising sessions.

13) Reflect on the assessment process. Is there anything related to assessment procedures your program would do differently next time? What went well?

Utilizing an online survey is convenient for students.  Data collection and analysis are equally convenient with the Google forms document that we've been using.

We may be focusing on retention efforts in the next year, so assessment methods may vary.

14) If the program did not engage in assessment activities, please explain.
Or, if the program did engage in assessment activities, please add any other important information here.
