  3. Are aware of academic resources and services on campus (e.g., STAR, tutoring, college and major advising, KOKUA, and Career Services).
  4. Build on and develop new learning skills necessary for academic success such as time management, active reading, note taking/mapping, and study skills.
  5. Identify academic strengths and weaknesses and learn effective strategies that suit their particular learning styles.
  6. Take advantage of tutorial services in order to gain a better understanding of course content and materials.

11) What was learned from the results?

The data from the 2013 Comprehensive Evaluations show a high level of effectiveness and student satisfaction with the advising and learning services that are provided.  Overall, advising and learning services were ranked higher in 10 out of 11 assessment questions when compared with the data from the 2012 evaluations.

12) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.

Results from the Comprehensive Evaluations is used to determine program effectiveness as well as areas that can be improved with additional staff training, program development and/or resources.  For example, mandatory study hall for all incoming student-athletes was eliminated during the 2012-2013 academic year because of the renovation of the Nagatani Academic Center and the resulting lack of physical space.  More responsibility was put on the individual student-athlete to seek out help when needed rather than meet an arbitrary requirement for weekly study hall hours.  In addition to higher rankings on the Comprehensive Evaluations, the overall cumulative gpa of  student-athletes was 3.04 at the end of end of the Spring 2013 semester, compared to 2.99 for Spring 2012.

13) Reflect on the assessment process. Is there anything related to assessment procedures your program would do differently next time? What went well?

We continue to have a lower than desirable response rate from student-athletes, in spite of administering evaluations earlier, starting in April rather than waiting until May.  Timing is a continuing problem and some of the lowest response rates came from teams that were traveling for competitons near the end of the semester.  Next year, we will work more closely with coaches to better coordinate the evaluation period with their travel schedules. Additionally we are exploring web-based assessment instruments as an alternative to paper evaluations with the hope of increasing student-athlete participation.

14) If the program did not engage in assessment activities, please explain.
Or, if the program did engage in assessment activities, please add any other important information here.
