Other: 10) For the assessment questions/goals stated in Question #5, summarize the actual results.
Measurement A: 100% of our students will attend a mandatory orientation session where students will receive training on multiple academic/curricular management tools including the STAR system, UHM Catalog, BSW Credit Check form, and the Student Handbook.
As of 9/12/12:
70/83 = 84.3% of BSW students completed orientation session.
Measurement B: 100% of student files will have an academic plan form that is updated every semester by the student and a faculty advisor.
Starting from 11/2011 (for advising for the Spring 2012 semester), instituted a requirement for all student files to have an academic plan form.
As of 9/12/12:
79/83 = 95.2% of BSW student files have an academic plan form.
74/83 = 89.2% of BSW student files have an academic plan form that appears to be updated.
Measurement C: In the BSW Exit Survey, 90% of respondents will indicate that they received assistance, if requested, in examining academic and professional goals for themselves.
11/30 (36.7%) have completed BSW exit survey.
Among 11 respondents, nine students reported that they requested assistance in examining academic goals, and 88.9% (8/9) reported that they received assistance.
Among 10 respondents, five students reported that they requested assistance in examining professional goals, and 100% (5/5) reported that they received assistance.
Measurement D: In the BSW Exit Survey, 90% of respondents will indicate that they received assistance, if requested, in identifying and utilizing appropriate resources to support them in achieving their academic and professional goals.
Four out of ten respondents reported that they requested assistance in identifying and utilizing appropriate resources, and 100% (4/4) reported that they received assistance.
11) What was learned from the results?
Academic advising is occurring with improved consistency and focus on progress towards degree completion. New student orientations are, for the most part, being completed by almost all students. When students requested assistance, 90-100% received related assistance. About 90 % of respondents requested assistance in examining academic goals, but less than half of respondents requested assistance in either examining professional goals, or identifying and utilizing appropriate resources.
12) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.
Plans will include developing strategies to improve monitoring of advising and new student orientation participation. We will also improve on faculty advisor trainings to broaden knowledge of undergraduate education and requisite courses for the major.
13) Reflect on the assessment process. Is there anything related to assessment procedures your program would do differently next time? What went well?
For future planning: Measurement A
- Develop a stricter follow-up to ensure that absent students complete an orientation make-up.
- Provide more direct training in the tools described in Measurement A.
For future planning: Measurement B
- Develop a system to determine a clear yes/no on whether the academic plan was reviewed and updated.
For future planning: Measurement C & D
- Develop a better strategy to increase the response rate for the exit survey.
- May consider paper-and-pencil questionnaire administration in a class setting.
