2) Students residing in the residence halls will demonstrate an ability to understand people who are different from them.

4) Did your program engage in any program assessment activities between June 1, 2011 and September 30, 2012? (e.g., establishing/revising outcomes, aligning activities to outcomes, collecting evidence, interpreting evidence, using results, revising the assessment plan, creating surveys, etc.)
Yes
No (skip to question 14)5) For the period June 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012: State the assessment question(s) and/or assessment goals. Include the student outcomes that were targeted, if applicable.
Assessment is too large to upload questions here. It is available at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2011SHSAssessment.
6) State the type(s) of evidence gathered to answer the assessment question and/or meet the assessment goals that were given in Question #5.
1) 81.5% of students who responded to our annual assessment indicated to some degree that they are able to live cooperatively with other people as a result of residing on campus.
2) 79.5% of students who responded to our annual assessment indicated to some degree that living on campus has enhanced their ability to understand people who are different from them.
3) 77.7% of students who responded to our annual assessment incidated to some degree that they feel safe in their living environment.
7) State how many persons submitted evidence that was evaluated. If applicable, please include the sampling technique used.
All 3402 students who resided in the residents halls at the time of the assessment received an invitation to take the assessment. 1,100 total students answered some questions; and a total of 1,081 students completed the assessment, for a response rate of 31.8%. For the data presented in the last section of this report, 1,100 students answered the questions on the assessment that pertained to the student learning outcomes.
8) Who interpreted or analyzed the evidence that was collected? Check all that apply.
Program faculty/staff member(s)
Faculty/staff committee
Ad hoc faculty/staff group
Director or department chairperson
Persons or organization outside the university
Students (graduate or undergraduate)
Dean or Associate Dean
Advisory Board
Other: 9) How did he/she/they evaluate, analyze, or interpret the evidence? Check all that apply.
Compiled survey results
Used quantitative methods on student data (e.g., grades, participation rates) or other numeric data
Used qualitative methods on interview, focus group, or other open-ended response data
Scored exams/tests/quizzes
Used a rubric or scoring guide
Used professional judgment (no rubric or scoring guide used)
External organization/person analyzed data (e.g., Social Science Research Institute)
Other: 10) For the assessment questions/goals stated in Question #5, summarize the actual results.
There is too much data to summarize here as the assessment was very large. We are also not comfortable uploading the entire summary data. For more information, please contact Nick Sweeton at nsweeton@hawaii.edu or 956-4012.
11) What was learned from the results?
For the results related to the student learning outcomes, we were able to determine the following:
*With regard to evolving our students ability to live cooperatively with others, we determined that big changes to our methods of achieving this outcome were unnecessary as most students report that they are able to live cooperatively with others as a result of living on campus. As a result, we have kept most aspects of our programming model in tact.
*With regard to evolving our students ability to understand people different from then, we determined that big changes to our diversity and social justice education strategies are not necessary as most students report an enhanced ability to understand people who are different from them. As a result, we have kept most aspects of our social, cultural, and diversity programming model in tact.
*WIth regard to safety, we have decided to focus more intently on this aspect of our program. When we drill down in the data, females in particular report not feeling as safe as we would like them to feel. As a result, changes to both our active and passive programming related to safety were implemenented, and we will measure the effectiveness to the changes in this year's assessment.
12) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.
This question was answered in section 11.
13) Reflect on the assessment process. Is there anything related to assessment procedures your program would do differently next time? What went well?
We had a decreased response percentage compared to the previous year. As a result, we have changed the marketing strategies for this year's assessment.
