4) Did your program engage in any program assessment activities between June 1, 2011 and September 30, 2012? (e.g., establishing/revising outcomes, aligning activities to outcomes, collecting evidence, interpreting evidence, using results, revising the assessment plan, creating surveys, etc.)
Yes
No (skip to question 14)5) For the period June 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012: State the assessment question(s) and/or assessment goals. Include the student outcomes that were targeted, if applicable.
The COE Office of Student Academic Services (OSAS) faculty wanted to assess how well students met SLO #3:
- Students will utilize OSAS advising services in any of the following ways: in-person; phone; Skype; Blackboard Collaborate; and weekend, evening, or satellite advising sessions.
It was our goal to create an online survey as a means to measure SLO #3. We also wanted to use the online survey to assess advisor effectiveness.
6) State the type(s) of evidence gathered to answer the assessment question and/or meet the assessment goals that were given in Question #5.
An online survey using Google Forms was created which included open ended responses as well as Likert scale multiple choice questions.
7) State how many persons submitted evidence that was evaluated. If applicable, please include the sampling technique used.
Multiple email notification messages were sent to currently enrolled College of Education students, requesting that they complete the online survey (link was provided). Forty- eight (48) students completed the online survey.
8) Who interpreted or analyzed the evidence that was collected? Check all that apply.
Program faculty/staff member(s)
Faculty/staff committee
Ad hoc faculty/staff group
Director or department chairperson
Persons or organization outside the university
Students (graduate or undergraduate)
Dean or Associate Dean
Advisory Board
Other: COE Instiutional Analyst (collected and compiled the data)9) How did he/she/they evaluate, analyze, or interpret the evidence? Check all that apply.
Compiled survey results
Used quantitative methods on student data (e.g., grades, participation rates) or other numeric data
Used qualitative methods on interview, focus group, or other open-ended response data
Scored exams/tests/quizzes
Used a rubric or scoring guide
Used professional judgment (no rubric or scoring guide used)
External organization/person analyzed data (e.g., Social Science Research Institute)
Other: 10) For the assessment questions/goals stated in Question #5, summarize the actual results.
Although respondents indicated various methods of contacting an advisor, the student comments indicated a preference for convenience. Email and Express Advising (walk-in to see an advisor without an appointment) services were frequently cited by students for their ease in contacting an advisor.
11) What was learned from the results?
The survey results validated our efforts at offering a multitude of advising services for students. They appear to be contacting advisors using various methods, but seem to prefer the convenience of Express Advising and reaching an advisor via email.
The COE OSAS faculty will cotinue to explore additional options to offer convenient, accessible services to students.
12) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.
Recognizing the importance of providing quick, convenient access to information for students, the COE OSAS faculty are committed to learning and ultilizing technology to provide additional services to students.
OSAS faculty, in conjunction with the College's Technology and Distance Programs unit, created an online module that contains information via print and video mediums. The moldule provides a venue for students to declare their major, learn how to use STAR, and access curriculum information, among other things.
OSAS faculty plan to develop additional modules to provide services for currently enrolled students. In addition, we are exploring ways to utilize Second Life, as a virtual learning community.
Technology is but one means to provide services to students. We still believe, and are committed to providing face-to-face individual and group sessions to personalize the advising experience for students.
13) Reflect on the assessment process. Is there anything related to assessment procedures your program would do differently next time? What went well?
The process of creating an onine survey enabled the OSAS faculty to engage in valuable dialogue regarding the content that was to be assessed, the process of assessment, and the procedures needed for fair assessment.
Procedurally, we plan to modify the process for how students complete the online survey. In the future we will give students the option of completing it shortly after leaving an advising session. We will have a spare laptop set up so students can complete the survey in the waiting area of our office. We will also give the students the option of completing the survey at home. If they select this option, we will send the survey link to their hawaii.edu email account.
14) If the program did not engage in assessment activities, please explain.
Or, if the program did engage in assessment activities, please add any other important information here.
We are in the process of modifying our SLOs. This will be reflected in the next assessment report.
