Date: Thu Oct 13, 2011 - 10:40:00 am
1) List your program's student outcomes.
1) Students residing in the residence halls will be aware of community living standards.
2) Students in the residence halls will have the opportunity to clarify their value systems.
3) Students in the residence halls will demonstrate an ability to study effectively.
2) Where are your program's student outcomes published? Mark all that apply and include URLs when appropriate.
Program's Website. URL:
Student Handbook. URL, if available online:
Information Sheet, Flyer, or Brochure. URL, if available online: NA
UHM Catalog. Page Number:
Other: Annual Assessment Report is used internally and shared with all staff.
Other: 3) Provide the program's activity map or other graphic that illustrates how program activities/services align with program student outcomes. Please upload it as a PDF.
- File (10/13/2011)
4) For the period June 1, 2010 to September 30, 2011: State the assessment question(s) and/or assessment goals. Include the student outcomes that were targeted, if applicable.
Our Annual Assessment is too long to print the entire document here. All student learning outcomes mentioned in this reported were part of what was measured in our annual assessment. Assessment instrument can be seen at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZVN5V5H.
5) State the type(s) of evidence gathered to answer the assessment question and/or meet the assessment goals that were given in Question 4.
SLO #1: In our annual assessment, 82.3% of respondents were aware of our published community standards; and 59.7% of respondents have read or "skimmed" the community standards document.
SLO #2: In our annual assessment, 54.9% of respondents agreed that living on campus has helped them clarify their value systems.
SLO #3: In our annual assessment, 41.9% of respondents agreed that living on campus has helped them develop effective study skills.
6) State how many persons submitted evidence that was evaluated. If applicable, please include the sampling technique used.
1643 our of 3353 resident students completed our 2010 assessment; this represents about 49% of students who reside on campus.
7) Who interpreted or analyzed the evidence that was collected. Check all that apply.
Program faculty/staff
Faculty/staff committee
Ad hoc faculty/staff group
Director or department chairperson
Persons or organization outside the university
Students (graduate or undergraduate)
Dean
Other 8) How did he/she/they evaluate, analyze, or interpret the evidence? Check all that apply.
Compiled survey results
Used qualitative methods on interview, focus group, open-ended response data
Scored exams/tests/quizzes
Used a rubric or scoring guide
Used professional judgment (no rubric or scoring guide used)
External organization/person analyzed data (e.g., Social Science Research Institute)
Other: 9) For the assessment questions/goals stated in Question 4, summarize the actual results.
Results were summarized in the previous answer.
10) What was learned from the results?
For the three stated outcomes, we learned the following:
1) Moving the community standards on-line and evolving the way we market them did result in a year-to-year increase in the percentage of students who were at least aware that they existed.
2) The overall impact of both passive and active attempts to help students to clarify their own value systems appear to be working - we have made no major changes to our programming model as a result.
3) We were not satisifed with the results of SLO #3. While we saw a slight increase in the percentage of respondents who stated they developed effective study skills, we would like more students to perceive the residence halls as an academic environment. As a result, this year, we added a peer advising office and we are working on providing more structured study halls. The 2011 assessment, completed later this month, will hopefully demonstrate continued improvement on this measure.
11) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.
1) Community standards will continue to be on-line and we have discontinued distribution of a physical community standards handbook. We re-vamped our marketing this year to futther encourage students to be aware of the standards.
2) We were pleased that our programming efforts - particularly those related to helping students to both clarifty their own values as well as respect other value systems - appear to be bearing fruit. As a result of this assessment, we decided to make only small "tweaks" to our programming model but keeping the overall model largely the same.
3) As a result of the assessment results, we have decided to focus more intently on creating an academic environment this year. We established an "academic committee" that is tasked with developing both passive and active strategies to increase the perception that on-campus housing is part of the academic environment of the university.
12) Reflect on the assessment process. Is there anything related to assessment procedures your program would do differently next time? What went well?
We were pleased with our 49% response rate - the prior year we got less than a 25% rate so our marketing and the prizes provided (Apple products) were successful in encouraging students to complete the assessment. No major changes planned for the 2011 assessment.
