Program: Mānoa Advising Center
Date: Tue Oct 11, 2011 - 8:20:21 pm
1) List your program's student outcomes.
Undecided or pre-major students select a major that best fits their abilities, interests and goals. (We understand that this is our mission statement only and that we need to develop both student learning outcomes and process / delivery outcomes. We hope to do this with the AIRO.)
2) Where are your program's student outcomes published? Mark all that apply and include URLs when appropriate.
Program's Website. URL:
Student Handbook. URL, if available online:
Information Sheet, Flyer, or Brochure. URL, if available online: NA
UHM Catalog. Page Number:

Other: 3) Provide the program's activity map or other graphic that illustrates how program activities/services align with program student outcomes. Please upload it as a PDF.
- File (10/11/2011)
4) For the period June 1, 2010 to September 30, 2011: State the assessment question(s) and/or assessment goals. Include the student outcomes that were targeted, if applicable.
MAC has set up a meeting with AIRO to formulate actual student learning outcomes and assessment goals. Up until this point, student satisfaction surveys and internal staff evaluations have been conducted.
5) State the type(s) of evidence gathered to answer the assessment question and/or meet the assessment goals that were given in Question 4.
Walk-in student surveys conducted for most appointments (except high traffic walk-in periods). Staff evaluations.
6) State how many persons submitted evidence that was evaluated. If applicable, please include the sampling technique used.
n = approximately 1735 (Summer 2010 to Summer 2011)
7) Who interpreted or analyzed the evidence that was collected. Check all that apply.
Program faculty/staff
Faculty/staff committee
Ad hoc faculty/staff group
Director or department chairperson
Persons or organization outside the university
Students (graduate or undergraduate)
Dean
Other 8) How did he/she/they evaluate, analyze, or interpret the evidence? Check all that apply.
Compiled survey results
Used qualitative methods on interview, focus group, open-ended response data
Scored exams/tests/quizzes
Used a rubric or scoring guide
Used professional judgment (no rubric or scoring guide used)
External organization/person analyzed data (e.g., Social Science Research Institute)
Other: 9) For the assessment questions/goals stated in Question 4, summarize the actual results.
Students' overall evaluation of the advisors / peer advisors was: 91.4% = excellent, 7.6% = good, .8% = fair and .1% = poor.
Of ten questions surveyed, students strongly agreed with between 93.4% - 87.2% of the statements. At the higher end, 93.4% of students strongly agreed that the advisors "listened carefully" and "respected my opinions." At the lower end, 87.2% of the students strongly agreed that "I am clearer about the options/resources" and 88.2% strongly agreed that the advisor "helped me resolve the problem / question."
10) What was learned from the results?
In the additional comments section, 178 students had positive comments. 61 students had suggestions - of these 40 expressed frustration at appointment scheduling procedures.
11) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.
(1) Since many of the comments requested more accessibility in terms of appointment scheduling, we extended the time during which we accept scheduling appointments over the phone.
(2) Normally, we schedule appointments according to the alpha of the student's last name. Since many of our students are undecided, this was deliberately done in order to ensure continuity for the student for appointment to appointment. However, we made appointment scheduling more flexible by giving the students the option of scheduling with a different advisor if their assigned advisor was not available or already booked for the time when they wanted to make the appointment.
12) Reflect on the assessment process. Is there anything related to assessment procedures your program would do differently next time? What went well?
Again, we realize that this is evaluation, not true assessment. We hope to begin our assessment plans this coming year.
