Program: Academic Advising
Date: Fri Oct 14, 2011 - 1:25:15 pm
1) List your program's student outcomes.
CTAHR's Academic and Student Affairs Office (ASAO) supports the following student learning outcomes (skills) for academic advising that were proposed by UHM’s Council of Academic Advisors:
By the time of graduation, advisees are able to…
- use MyUH, STAR, Catalog, SOC, and Program Sheets to identify and understand program requirements. (knowledge)
- locate and use university resources and services to help identify and achieve goals. (investigation/research)
- come to academic advising sessions prepared with questions, an academic plan, and/or other relevant materials. (preparedness)
- design a reasonable and timely academic plan that leads to a Bachelor degree in a desired field. (decision making)
- evaluate current academic and career goals in light of personal values, interests, aptitudes, and skills. (personal-academic connection)
2) Where are your program's student outcomes published? Mark all that apply and include URLs when appropriate.
Program's Website. URL:
Student Handbook. URL, if available online:
Information Sheet, Flyer, or Brochure. URL, if available online:
UHM Catalog. Page Number:
Other: CTAHR ASAO academic advising SLO are not published
Other: 3) Provide the program's activity map or other graphic that illustrates how program activities/services align with program student outcomes. Please upload it as a PDF.
- File (10/13/2011)
4) For the period June 1, 2010 to September 30, 2011: State the assessment question(s) and/or assessment goals. Include the student outcomes that were targeted, if applicable.
Survey questions:
Respond to the following statements on a scale of 1-5:
1 = strongly disagree
2 = disagree
3 = neither agree nor disagree
4 = agree
5 = strongly agree
(1) I am able to use MyUH, STAR, the Catalog, Online Schedule of Classes, and Program/Degree Sheets to identify and understand program requirements.
(2) I am able to locate and use university resources and services to identify and achieve goals.
(3) I come to academic advising sessions prepared with questions, an academic plan, and/or other relevant materials.
(4) I am able to design a reasonable and timely academic plan that leads to a Bachelor degree in a desired field.
(5) I am able to evaluate current academic and career goals in light of personal values, interests, aptitudes, and skills.
5) State the type(s) of evidence gathered to answer the assessment question and/or meet the assessment goals that were given in Question 4.
Surveys on attainment of SLO were distributed to juniors/seniors in the TPSS academic program and the TPSS undergraduate advisor.
In fall 2010, CTAHR's Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs served as academic advisor for the BE undergraduate program and met students who requested advising. Discussions in the advising sessions form the basis for assessment of attainment of SLO by BE students.
6) State how many persons submitted evidence that was evaluated. If applicable, please include the sampling technique used.
Only four TPSS students participated in the assessment survey. The TPSS undergraduate advisor also assessed students' attainment of SLO based on the advisor's perceptions.
Only six BE students met with the Associate Dean for advising (the other BE students met with the regular BE advisor prior to the Fall 2010 semester).
7) Who interpreted or analyzed the evidence that was collected. Check all that apply.
Program faculty/staff
Faculty/staff committee
Ad hoc faculty/staff group

10) What was learned from the results?
TPSS students generally felt they achieved the SLO posed for academic advising, though there is room for improvement.
BE students generally demonstrated attainment of SLO.
11) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.
The results of the assessment were largely positive and indicate that students generally are achieving the SLO for academic advising. The pool of students assessed, however, was very small. We plan to expand the number of students assessed in the future.
12) Reflect on the assessment process. Is there anything related to assessment procedures your program would do differently next time? What went well?
The results of the assessment were largely positive and indicate that students generally are achieving the SLO for academic advising. The pool of students assessed, however, was very small. We plan to expand the number of students assessed in the future.
