New Students Explore Asian Studies

On August 19, Asian Studies and the Ethnomusicology program in the Department of Music hosted "Play Your Way through UHM" workshops for New Student Orientation, focusing on the music ensembles cross listed between Music and Asian Studies, plus a few more.

These included MUS 410B Hawaiian Chorus, ASAN/MUS 311H Javanese Gamelan, ASAN/MUS 311C Koto, ASAN/MUS 311I Gaga, ASAN/MUS 311G Kulintang, and MUS 311M Recycled Instruments (Thai folk style). Riot Games designer Matthew Hikaru Dunn also gave a presentation about how his ensemble skills and liberal arts education gave him an edge in his game design career, and how the skills learned in arts and humanities classes transfer to creative careers.

In the photos, Sensei Darin Miyashiro and his beginning Koto ensemble class teach new students (and faculty!) how to play the familiar tune "Sakura" on August 19, and new graduate students join GAs and faculty at the CALL Ice Cream Social following orientation on August 20.
