Student Testimonials

Christina Geisse

The Asian Studies Program was incredible because most professors were undertaking their own research, passionate about their subject of study, and enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with students. It felt fresh and profound at the same time. Inspiring!

I was able to delve deep and focus on the areas of Asian Studies that truly interested me, and therefore gained a much more thorough and developed understanding of my fields of interest, which are applicable to my current career path. Also, the professors are extremely helpful and want their students to succeed. They were very supportive both while I was at UH and after I graduated.

I graduated in 2014 from the University of Hawaii with a Masters in Asian Studies and Graduate Certificate in Philippine Studies. Since graduating, I have been working as a consultant in a management consulting firm in Singapore. My work has allowed me to work closely with governments on various policy issues in Singapore, Southeast Asia and East Africa.

In 2017, I returned to academia and am now pursuing a Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of British Columbia, with a focus on Southeast Asian politics and the interactions between technology and politics.

My time at the Asian Studies Program provided me with an in-depth understanding of Southeast Asia, and offered me an invaluable interdisciplinary education that honed my critical thinking and writing skills. One key reason why I joined the program at UHM was because of its distinguished faculty, including the opportunity to work under the guidance of Professor Patricio Abinales. The mentorship and instruction I’ve received from the faculty has gone a long way in helping me to establish my career both in the corporate and academic world.
