Bio

Dr. Hayashida’s research is in home and community-based program development, and related policy work began in 1980 at a geriatric hospital in Hawai’i.  During that time, he has worked to assess home- and community-based alternatives to institutional care to stem the high cost of health care while maintaining quality of care. This has included, but is not limited to, projects related to the use of carehomes for nursing home care, training for paraprofessional healthcare workers, and the use of technology for elder care. His work has pivoted toward active aging with the creation of a non-financial pre-retirement program to assist the Boomer generation as they transition into retirement. Given the massive number of retiring boomers with skills, wisdom, knowledge, connections, financial independence, and time on their hands, promoting an active aging lifestyle can help society marshal this human resource to remain healthy and engaged, and to continue contributing to the community’s needs.  He is also reviewing the demographic implications of population aging and fertility decline in countries like Japan, and am currently reviewing the relative efficacy of countermeasures, including active aging programs, to reverse or moderate the depopulation trend.

Research Interest:

1.     Methods to marshal the power and potential of active retirees to remain healthy, engaged, and continuously contributing to the next generation and the community at large.

2.     The evaluation of strategies to reverse or moderate depopulation caused by population aging and fertility decline.
