Year 0

Plan ahead

Year 1

Freshman Year!

  • This isn’t high school — expect to be challenged!
  • Make friends (you’re all in this together) and form study groups
  • Meet your advisors
  • Choose a second language/culture to study as a global citizen
  • Begin developing your resume: Get involved on campus
  • Apply for a campus job
  • Explore your major
  • Develop life/time management skills – develop your independence
  • Choose an exciting summer opportunity in your major (ask your major advisor)
Year 2

Sophomore Year!

  • Join student organizations and volunteer for community projects
  • Consider participating in the Honors program, Golden Key, or other honor/service societies
  • Explore career options
  • Develop your resume: Pursue research opportunities
  • Explore UHM’s many resources and opportunities
  • Consider adding a second major, minor, or certificate
  • Use elective credits to explore interests and expand your world
  • Check in regularly with both your major and college advisors
  • Complete your academic plan through graduation
  • Plan to participate in Study Abroad, National Student Exchange, or Manoa International Exchange programs
  • Apply for summer internships and major-related opportunities
Year 3

Junior Year!

  • Create a CV (curriculum vitae) and resume
  • Practice regular, honest self-assessment
  • Work closely with faculty and engage in research
  • Participate in Study Abroad, National Student Exchange, Manoa International Exchange, or other exchange programs
  • Seek service opportunities and find ways to give back to your community (e.g., peer mentor, peer advisor, volunteer, etc.)
  • Volunteer for leadership positions and develop your leadership skills
  • Choose upper-division elective courses to expand your marketable skills (writing, public speaking/presentations, tech skills, organization, etc.) … and squeeze in fun, exploratory courses just for you
  • During the year, pursue discipline-related work experience
  • It’s your final college summer: plan an exciting summer working in your discipline
Year 4

Senior Year!

  • Apply for Graduation and register to walk in Commencement
  • It’s your last year! – take fun, exploratory courses to enrich your life (e.g., music, art, dance, theater, film, history, cultures ….)
  • Work closely with a faculty mentor who can write letters of recommendation and serve as a reference
  • With the help of your faculty mentor, network within your discipline and look for post-graduation opportunities
  • Put your best effort into term papers and projects
  • Publish research or complete a capstone experience
  • Join professional organizations in your discipline
  • Visit the Career Center: practice interviewing, writing resumes, and writing application essays
  • Explore post-graduation opportunities for jobs/careers or graduate school, and begin applying; take any required graduate entry exams
  • Join UHM’s A&S Alumni Association
  • Attend commencement, and celebrate with family and friends:
